Home Remedies: Treating Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a commonly occurring ailment. There are no known cures for Psoriasis and although it is not said to be contagious, getting it is something that should be avoided. This can be done by maintaining good overall hygiene and keeping your skin well moisturized. Normally keeping a good hygiene is an excellent way to prevent such a disease. However, if one does develop it, then there are a number of home remedies that can be used to overcome the most common associated problems of itching and inflammation. Hence it is important to know how to manage this disease by using home remedies.

Some of the important ones are:

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is considered to be the one the wonder plants of this generation and almost every home has it. Aloe Vera is very useful in many home remedies. The gel of aloe Vera leaves is very useful in combating issues associated with psoriasis. This plant is a powerhouse of Vitamin E which is good for the skin.



Bananas are another home remedy that is readily available; which is cheap as well as effective. Applying the peel of the banana using its softer white side on surface of the affected area makes it smooth and reduces the itching sensation.

Apple Vinegar


Use of apple cider vinegar along with warm water relieves the symptoms of itching. This can be used in form of a cotton ball dipped in a solution of apple vinegar diluted in water.

Essential oils like Chamomile


The essential oils are very useful against any symptom of Psoriasis. Chamomile oil has got a sweat smell and contains many natural compounds that are useful in treatment and prevention of Psoriasis. It is very useful during the flare up and leads to immediate relief.

Cayenne Pepper


Although this makes a part of our food intake, it can also be used externally by mixing it with a little bit of olive oil to form a paste that can be applied to the affected area

Olive oil


Olive oil is commonly available in kitchen and hence it is very handy in treatment of any disease using home remedies. It has a number of antioxidants which have healing effects on the skin. It is considered to be a very good moisturizer and is definitely better than most of the commercially available ones because it has no side effects or chemical reactions on the skin.

Coconut oil


Again, coconut oil is generally available in all kitchens. It is not as costly as olive oil and can be used effectively in treating all type of skin problems. It has a very nice Aroma and also makes the skin soft and has a very soothing effect.

Fish oil

Fish oil has many medical uses and should be a very important ingredient of our daily diet. Consuming fish oil definitely has a good effect on skin. Besides this, it also has a positive effect when used in external form. All you have to do is make a small incision on the fish oil capsule and apply the oil that comes out on the affected region. It stops and inflammation immediately

Baking soda


There would hardly be any kitchen which has no baking soda. Baking soda is well known for its security properties and is used in many home medicines. To use it in case of Psoriasis all you have to do is to mix one part of baking soda in four parts of lukewarm water and apply on the affected area.



An oatmeal bath is a time tested remedy to relieve symptoms of Psoriasis. All you have to do is to add one cup of crushed or powdered oats to the tub water before taking a bath.  This is especially helpful when there are lesions all over the body.

Epsom salt


Instead of oatmeal we can also add some salt to the tub of lukewarm water while taking a bath. Epsom salt provides relief from symptoms because it consists of chemicals that help or combating the effects of inflammation of the skin.
