If you have been injured, you can wait for a medical professional to treat your wounds if you have any. But while waiting, you can simply pinch on specific parts of the body, which are known as pressure points, to stop the bleeding.
Pressure points are located in areas where there are arteries and veins, which when pinched can slow down the flow of the blood and hopefully start clotting.
Where to Start Pinching
You can now stop or at least slow down blood flow if you have Injuries in the following parts of the body:
1. Head and Neck
Bleeding from the head or the neck can be very severe. In fact, these parts tend to bleed more than the other parts of the body.
The reason behind this is that there is a huge volume of blood that passes through here, especially when there is pressure. A small wound on the head or the neck can easily lead to a significant blood loss.
Therefore, you will need to pinch on the following pressure points:
- Over the temples
- Below the jaw
- Along the neck
- Top of the shoulders
Make sure you apply pressure on the same side of the head or neck that has the wound. Also, don’t ever pinch both sides.
2. Hands and Arms
Injuries in arms and hands are quite common. You can stop the bleeding by pressing firmly on the pressure points right above the wound itself. Sometimes though, the pain is too severe for the patient to bear, so this technique is not always possible.
Thankfully, there are other points you can choose from, including:
- Under the biceps
- On top of the elbow’s fleshy part
- Underside of the patient’s wrist
The best way to stop the bleeding is to choose the pressure point that is nearest to the wound. Work your way up if the bleeding does not decrease. It can be tricky at first because the points are not too evident ; however, you can feel for a pulse and pinch it right there.
3. Feet, Legs, and Thighs
Wounds in these areas can lead to heavy bleeding because there are large veins and arteries as well as thick tissues here. If the patient is bleeding in the thigh, apply pressure on the right or left of the area where the leg and the groin meet close to the abdomen. You can use a gauze pad or a fabric and press there instead of pinching the mentioned pressure points.
Meanwhile, lower leg and feet wounds can be stopped by firmly pressing on the following pressure points:
- Thick part behind the knee
- Front of the ankles
- Back of the ankles
Knowing these pressure points can save you or your loved ones from losing a lot of blood until the medic arrives.
