Sinusitis is a very common infection and it is manifested with painful symptoms, inflammation and sinus headache. It can be caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses, or it can be just an allergic reaction to all kinds of irritants.
According to Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old system of natural healing, every individual has other symptoms and causes, and that depends on their body’s governing principles called dosha. An example of that is the fact that some excessive drafts may cause some infections, and we blame it on the cold, but it is actually vata dosha that determines all circulation and flow in the body. But, in other situations, causes can be allergic reactions, or liver irritations, like alcohol. This is connected to the pitta dosha, which determines metabolism and decreases inflammations. In the end, bad chemicals that we intake with food, cold drinks, or just overeating can unbalance kapha, the lubricating dosha, and cause sinusitis.
Kapha regulates mucus and fluids in the sinus cavity, so all sinus infections can cause disbalance of kapha. Cooked food, like steam veggies, grains, fruits, and all the food that is easy to digest can lead to balance of kapha, since they have healing properties.
All food that includes red meat, cheese, yogurt, should be avoided, as well as alcohol and iced and cold drinks. Herbal tea and almost all hot beverages can be really helpful and healing. One more thing you can do is to inhale the steam from freshly boiled water for about 10 minutes, two times a day. You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the water, because it will open your nasal passages.
If you have a chronic sinusitis, then your immune system must be the weekend, so you have to work on having it strengthen. You can do that by eating food that is easy to digest, because if your digestive system gets overloaded toxin called ama is created. This toxin will spread through your body and cause sinusitis.
Building up of immunity can be easily done with a simple detox. You can do that with boiled spring water that you will have to sip whole day. You can also add two slices of fresh ginger, four leaves of mint, one teaspoon of marshmallow root, and two cloves. This will bring you extra relief during sinusitis.
Turmeric, cumin, coriander, black pepper, ginger and fennel can also increase your immune system, and ease the symptoms of sinus infection.
