Mold, odors, dust mites, and all other chemicals in the air can have bad impact on your health, especially on a respiratory tract. And since plants take bad air and turn it into healthy oxygen, it is very good to have them around in your home. These next five plants will promote a good night’s sleep and relaxing thoughts. And if you live with pets, feel free to multiply the number of plants in your apartment.

Aloe Vera

Even though it is well known as a plant that will soothe inflammation and heal wounds, Aloe Vera will also purify the air you breathe. It will get rid of formaldehyde and benzene from the air and give you a good night’s rest because it will reduce carbon dioxide levels at night.


This plant is really easy to maintain, because it need minimum water and your attention. It is very resistant to everything, and because of that the Egyptians called it the ‘plant of immortality’.

Areca Palm


This plant is one of the most popular household and office plants. The reason for that is maybe the fact that when NASA tested 50 plants for their ability to filter the air, Areca Palm got really high scores. It can add moisture the air, and also purify benzene and trichloroethylene from the air around us.

If you decide to buy this plant, keep in mind that it prefers bright sunlight, but too much of it can damage the leaves. Keep Areca Palm in moderate temperatures and try not to overwater it.

Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue)

The study that NASA leaded had some really amazing results related to this plant. Results have shown that snake plant decreased any problems related to the respiratory tract, headaches and eye irritation.


When NASA locked this plant in a chamber with several noxious gases results after 24 hours showed that the amount of Benzene was decreased by 53% and Trichloroethylene was reduced by 13.4%.

If you need a bedroom plant, this is maybe the perfect candidate, because it will provide a good night’s sleep and relaxed mornings. It doesn’t require too much light, but try not to keep it in the rooms where the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.


Your room and office will be brightened up with this lovely plant full of colors. Chrysanthemum is not just a pretty flower; it can filter the air, reducing the amount of benzene, the common ingredient of glue, paint or detergents.


Ancient Greeks used this plant for many medical purposes. You can use it to treat high blood pressure, chest pains, dizziness, type 2 diabetes and swelling too. It can even be used in a treatment against prostatic cancer when combined with some other healthy herbs.

Chrysanthemum doesn’t require too much, but you will have to find a place with a lot of sunlight, if you want to grow it inside.

English Ivy

The last, but not the least on this list is English Ivy. When NASA showed the results from the study about plants that filter the air, English Ivy took the first place as the best air purifying house plant. It has excellent ability to absorb formaldehyde and its leaves can reduce all the symptoms related to asthma and allergies.


This plant is very easy to maintain and grow, and the vine can improve the interior of your apartment since it will look beautiful in a hanging basket. But, be aware, even though it can purify the air, English Ivy is toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach from kids or pets.
