A Guideline on Importance of Alkaline Diets

One of the best ways to maintaining good health is discovering the right proportion of various ingredients of our diet.

This can be achieved by making an informed choice of food items that would balance the alkaline potential of our bodies. In order to achieve this, it is important to first learn which foods are acidic in nature and which are alkaline; and thereby become aware of including them in our diet in a correct proportion.

This will help in prevention of any diseases from developing in our body.

It is also important to understand that human body always tries to achieve a state of natural equilibrium of the pH value of about 7.365.   This value is achieved as the body as it tries to draw the nutrients from the food; hence what we consume as food has a great effect on the pH value i.e. the acidity of our body and hence, on the overall health.

To achieve this we do not have to limit ourselves only to the alkaline foods but include them in a proportion so that they form an alkaline base of any diet plan it is good enough. We must therefore consume a wide variety of health foods which include fruits and vegetables that have plenty of vitamins and nutrients.

All foods contains acid as well as alkaline-forming nutrients. In some foods however, the acid-forming elements are dominant; while in the others, the alkaline elements dominate. As per modern principles of biochemistry, it isn’t the organic materiel of food that leaves acidic or alkaline residue our body; it is rather the inorganic matter (like sulfur, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) that determines the alkalinity or acidity of our body fluids.

Unfortunately, most of the food that we eat today it consists of refined grains, conventional meat, specialized dairy products, artificial sweeteners, and many other acid forming substances.  As per certain experts, ideally our diet should consist roughly of 80 % alkaline and 20 % acid forming food but instead it consists mostly of acid forming foods.  We must guard against this as it tends to to inhibit the nerve function and damages the cells of our body.

According to various resources regarding alkaline-forming and acidic foods, the best alkaline forming foods include some of the commonly available items. Here is a list of common day to day food items that are recommended to keep our body in an alkaline state-

  • Chia seeds
  • Sprouts
  • Dates
  • String beans
  • Almonds
  • Avocados
  • Fresh coconuts
  • Raisins
  • Lemons
  • Wheatgrass
  • Melons (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew)
  • Figs
  • Root vegetables (beets, turnips, radishes, carrots, rutabagas)
  • Cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage)
  • Leafy greens (Swiss chard, kale, spinach, turnip greens)
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Cucumbers
  • Raw, grass-fed milk

This is just a suggested list of the most commonly occurring alkaline foods that are available. there are many others that you can use to keep your good health by maintaining the correct pH balance it is important to incorporate most of these food items in our diets so that there is a lesser consumption of acid forming substances like alcohol, coffee, sugar, etc.

Having alkaline food also helps in prevention of cancer and many lifelong diseases besides that it also helps in losing weight and controlling Acid Reflux.  The other conditions in which it is helpful is controlling diabetes.

However there is one point you should never forget while making any major changes in the diet plans and that is – consult your doctor so that there are no ill effects due to any dietary changes that you make.
